Beyond substitutive dynamical systems: S-adic expansions
نویسندگان
چکیده
An S-adic expansion of an infinite word is a way of writing it as the limit of an infinite product of substitutions (i.e., morphisms of a free monoid). Such a description is related to continued fraction expansions of numbers and vectors. Indeed, with a word is naturally associated, whenever it exists, the vector of frequencies of its letters. A fundamental example of this relation is between Sturmian sequences and regular continued fractions. In this survey paper, we study S-adic words from different perspectives, namely word combinatorics, ergodic theory, and Diophantine approximation, by stressing the parallel with continued fraction expansions.

متن کاملS - adic expansions related to continued fractions
We consider S-adic expansions associated with continued fraction algorithms, where an S-adic expansion corresponds to an infinite composition of substitutions. Recall that a substitution is a morphism of the free monoid. We focus in particular on the substitutions associated with regular continued fractions (Sturmian substitutions), and with Arnoux–Rauzy, Brun, and Jacobi–Perron (multidimension...

P. Erdős asked how frequently 2 has a ternary expansion that omits the digit 2. He conjectured this holds only for finitely many values of n. We generalize this question to consider iterates of two discrete dynamical systems. The first considers ternary expansions of real sequences xn(λ) = ⌊λ2 ⌋, where λ > 0 is a real number, and the second considers 3-adic expansions of sequences yn(λ) = λ2 , ...

P. Erdős asked how frequently does 2n have a ternary expansion that omits the digit 2. He conjectured that this holds only for finitely many values of n. We generalize this question to consider iterates of two discrete dynamical systems. The first considers truncated ternary expansions of real sequences xn(λ) = ⌊λ2n⌋, where λ > 0 is a real number, along with its untruncated version, while the s...
